SMBA UPDATE: 2020 SEASON
Submitted By Adam Carricato on Tuesday, June 30, 2020
June 30, 2020

It is with deep regret and disappointment that Soo Minor Baseball Association officially announces the cancellation of the 2020 Baseball Season.

While this was a very difficult decision to make, we join other local organizations across Ontario in coming to this decision. Like many, we hoped and continued to plan for a delayed season this year.  However, it has become clear that it is no longer feasible for many reasons, including our top priority of ensuring the health and safety of all players, coaches, umpires, executive members and their families at this time.

Although we have cancelled the season, we have left the door open to the possibility of small group baseball clinics and camps later this summer as provincial restrictions loosen.  Any events will be posted on our website at www.sooball.com and on our Facebook page.

Please be advised that all registration fees will be refunded 100%.  As we are currently working with our online merchant, please allow until August 1, 2020 before contacting SMBA regarding the status of your refund.

As an Executive and an organization, we share your disappointment and wish you a healthy and safe summer. We hope you'll play catch, take some swings and come back for a fantastic 2021 season with Soo Minor Baseball Association.

Sincerely,

SMBA Executive

On June 16, 2020, Baseball Ontario’s suspension on in-person baseball activities ended.  As of Tuesday, member organizations around Ontario could start up in-person outdoor baseball activities while meeting Ontario’s public health restrictions of gatherings no greater than 10 people. Those outdoor activities are limited to training and practices.  Member organizations are required to follow the “Return to Baseball” protocols regarding health and safety measures and tracking developed by Baseball Ontario and approved by the province.

This week, the SMBA Executive met to discuss a reopening plan for baseball in Sault Ste. Marie.  Although a feasible plan could not be developed at this time, the executive continues to work towards a reopening plan as provincial public health restrictions loosen in the near future.

As the normal baseball season period becomes shorter, normal registration fees can no longer be justified and an amount of refund would be expected. In the interim, with ongoing uncertainty, the executive has approved to refund all registrants 100% of paid registration fees.  All refunds will be returned to the credit card used for payment within the coming weeks.

It continues to be the hope of Soo Minor Baseball that we will be able to provide some kind of baseball activities this summer.  Please stay tuned for more updates and information at www.sooball.com or on our Facebook page.

Thank you for your understanding.

Please continue to stay safe.

April 18, 2020

On April 14, the SMBA Executive met virtually to continue planning for the upcoming 2020 baseball season.  As Ontario has extended its state of emergency until May 12, we have no further update on the start of the season.

As we continue to accept baseball registrations at this time, the Executive is now deferring all future payments for all registration fees until a confirmed season can happen.  We encourage all players who intend on playing baseball this summer to register at this time so we can continue planning for a hopeful season. Should a season occur, an email will be sent out with information on how to make the payment for the season at that time.

As more information becomes available in the coming weeks, we will make another announcement.  Please check our website and Facebook page for updates.

We hope you and your families are staying healthy and safe.  Please continue to practice social and physical distancing to keep our world safe.

Thank you,

SMBA Executive

April 2, 2020

On March 31, the SMBA Executive met virtually to discuss the upcoming 2020 baseball season.  With Ontario’s newest release of keeping schools closed until at least May 4, the Executive faces many challenges on planning for the upcoming season.  Many questions are left unanswered as we all wait for the end of the pandemic.

With health and safety of our players, parents, umpires, field staff and executive members at the forefront, we continue to monitor the evolving impact of the Coronavirus COVID-19. We will continue to follow the directions, measures and restrictions put in place by the Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments, Algoma Public Health and Baseball Ontario.

Despite this ongoing unprecedented time of uncertainty in our world, the Executive continues to anticipate and hope for a baseball season this summer.  We hope to provide an opportunity for children in Sault Ste. Marie to engage in summer fun with their friends, especially after at least two months of isolation.

As we continue to accept baseball registration at this time, the Executive has extended the registration and refund deadline until further notice. We have also removed all administration, late and cancellation fees for the 2020 season. As a reminder, families may apply for financial assistance through the Jumpstart subsidy program.  Please go to their website for more information and to begin an application.  https://jumpstart.canadiantire.ca/.

As more information becomes available in the coming weeks, we will make another announcement.  Please check our website and Facebook page for updates. We hope you and your families are staying healthy and safe.  Please continue to practice social and physical distancing to keep our world safe.

Thank you,

SMBA Executive
